G-STAR RAW’S ART PLATFORM PRESENTS NEW WORK BY JAPANESE DESIGNER KODAI IWAMOTO
The Art of RAW started in 2023 and, since then, has collaborated with various emerging design talents from all over the world. Each time, denim becomes the main source for artistic research, and denim waste – the material for creating art works. G-Star RAW gives artists the freedom to experiment, creating unique pieces within their recycled materials focus.
This time, G-Star RAW worked with Japanese designer Kodai Iwamoto. He created a lamp made from traditional washi paper and infused with denim waste fibers. As a result, a brand-new material was born. Kodai Iwamoto used the charm of the paper material as the starting point for his art object. Through the washi paper, the historical connection between Japan and the Netherlands could be revealed. It goes back to the 19th century, when these pieces of paper were used as packaging material to wrap ceramics. The unfamiliar composition and color of these Ukiyo-e prints inspired many artists, for example, Vincent van Gogh.
Iwamoto’s final lightning object is also inspired by Shoji, traditional Japanese doors made from a circular wooden frame, a lattice-like framework. This modern interpretation fuses traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.
